Balloons are made of latex. And while many balloon companies claim that natural latex balloons will biodegrade within 6 months, this is simply not true. Balloons, along with the plastic strings, can have severe implications on the environment. We tend to let think ‘out of sight, out of mind’ with this kind of thing, but what we don’t realize is that these balloons will land somewhere. An animal could mistake them for food, choke or get poisoned and die. The strings could strangle. The balloons could land in the ocean, adding to the already gross amount of litter that washes ashore. Letting go of balloons is littering- don’t ever think that just because they float away from you, they float away forever.
